About
LWVD
The League of Women voters of detroit (LWVD)
is an affiliate of the League of Women Voters of the United
States (LWVUS). It is one of twenty-six locals that comprise
LWV Michigan. Detroit is also a member of the Metropolitan
area League which includes locals in Wayne, Oakland, and Macomb
Counties.
Membership in the Detroit League confers
membership at the national, state and city levels. Conventions
are held at the National and State levels biennially. Local
and Metro Leagues convene Annual Meetings.
The publications, National Voter, Michigan
Voter and Detroit Voter are mailed to members every two to
four months. This is a primary means of getting information
to members. The web site www.lwvdetroit.org is designed to
support member networking.
The League is a grass roots organization.
It uses a process of study and consensus building to determine
issues for support. Action, advocacy and testimony carried
out by members is based on this process. Members are encouraged
to meet at the neighborhood level in small groups. These small
unit meetings permit in depth discussions at a time and place
convenient to the group. Active league units are Downtown,
Wayne State University and Northwest Detroit. A cyberspace
unit is on the drawing board.
General membership meetings are called to
build consensus on issues, collaborate with coalition partners
and adopt action strategies. Special projects include Judicial
Independence, high school essay contests, and a traveling
exhibit.
