The League of Women Voters, a nonpartisan political organization, encourages informed and active participation in government, works to increase understanding of major public policy issues, and influences public policy through education and advocacy.
The LWV of Detroit will act to inspire good government and transparency so that government is responsive to the needs of its people. We will do this by providing candidate forums, policy studies, and tools to encourage an informed citizenry to participate actively in the political process.
We believe in representative government and in the individual liberties defined in the U.S. Constitution.
We believe democratic government depends upon the informed and active participation of its citizens. This requires that governmental bodies protect the citizen's right to know by giving adequate notice of proposed actions, holding open meetings, and making public records accessible.
We believe every citizen's right to vote should be protected.
We believe every person should have access to free public education that provides equal opportunity for all.
We believe no person or group should suffer legal, economic, or administrative discrimination.
We believe an efficient and economical government requires competent personnel, the clear assignment of responsibility, adequate financing, and coordination among the different agencies and levels of government.
We believe a responsive government is responsive to the will of the people. This means our government maintains an equitable and flexible system of taxation. It means that our government promotes the conservation and development of natural resources in the public interest and shares in the solution of economic and social problems that affect the general welfare. A responsive government promotes a sound economic plan and adopts domestic policies that facilitate the solution of international problems.
We believe cooperation with other nations is essential in the search for solutions to world problems and that development of international organization and international law is imperative in the promotion of world peace.
Our League affirms its commitment to reflect the diversity of Detroit, Hamtramck, and Highland Park in our membership. We understand diverse perspectives are important and necessary for responsible and representative decision making.
We believe both diversity and pluralism are fundamental to our League core values. Practicing inclusivity enhances the organization's ability to respond more effectively to changing conditions and needs.
In both values and practices, the LWV Detroit affirms that there shall be no barriers to participation in any activity on the basis of gender, race, creed, age, sexual orientation, national origin, or disability. We will continue to seek new ways to enable and engage direct participation of our members.
