  When We All Vote. NATIONAL WEEK OF ACTION! In celebration of the 53rd anniversary of the signing of the Voting Rights Act, Michelle Obama's When We All Vote Campaign is partnering with Black Entertainment Television (BET) to promote its Week of Action.

From Saturday, September 22 to Saturday, September 29, communities across the country will host voter registration events throughout the week in cities big and small. There will be flagship events in at least a dozen cities including Detroit.   Forum: Revised City Charter for the City of Highland Park/CANCELLED. Unfortunately, the Forum to discuss the Revised City Charter for the City of Highland Park (initially scheduled for April 18 and moved to April 22) has been CANCELLED. We have not been able to secure a speaker from the City Council. Although we did have a speaker from the City Charter Commission, we needed both for a nonpartial presentation. The Highland Park Business Association will attempt to outline for the public what the revisions are and will again try to share this in a nonpartisan way with the community before the special May 7 election. LWVDetroit will do its best to put this information/event on our website.

Urbanum lifestyle store in New Center (https://www.urbanumdetroit.com) will host a celebration in honor of the 100th anniversary of women earning the right to vote in the United States. The event date is exactly 100 years to the day Congress passed the 19th Amendment.

Sip. Shop. Suffrage. will feature merchandise with a women empowerment and suffrage focus. We encourage participants to wear white in the spirit of the suffragettes. A portion of the event proceeds will go to the Coalition On Temporary Shelter. A COTS representative will share information on their organization's services for women and families. CitizenDetroit Dinner & Dialogue: MAKING THE GRADE - Quality K-12 Education. LWV of Detroit is partnering with CitizenDetroit for another Dinner & Dialogue, this time focusing on education. Hear from Dr. Nikolai Vitti, Superintendent of the Detroit Public Schools Community District about how the DPSCD is addressing challenges that affect quality education. Stephanie Young, Executive Director of the Community Education Commission will outline how the CEC is measuring school quality by developing an evaluation process for Detroit's public schools. Receive information about the State of Michigan's proposed A-F grading system. As always, there will be an opportunity to get involved and learn how you can have a positive impact on the success of Detroit's kids. Admission is FREE, but reservations are required. Dinner starts at 5:30pm with the program beginning at 6:00pm. Free parking available in the Local 58 lot (entrance on Porter St)

PUBLIC HEARING: Michigan Secretary of State and Election Security Advisory Commission. To help safeguard our elections in 2020 and beyond, Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson has convened an Election Security Advisory Commission. This task force of election officials and security experts is looking at ways to improve security and will provide a list of recommendations to safeguard elections in Michigan against foreign interference and other threats to democracy.

The advisory commission is holding a series of meetings in 2019 and will make election security recommendations in advance of the 2020 elections. The public hearing July 29 is part of a comprehensive effort to obtain citizen input. The advisory commission invites members of the public to participate and share their election security concerns and items for further study.
