Why should you join?
Joining LWV Detroit is a great way to get involved in your community and play an active role in our democracy. LWV members make a visible difference by serving as community leaders who use their experience to create positive, lasting change not only in Detroit, Hamtramck, and Highland Park but also across the State of Michigan and throughout the nation. Anyone 16 years of age or older can join.
Through participation in League projects, you will do the following:
- Contribute valuable service to your community.
- Gain knowledge and experience through studying and discussing timely and important topics.
- Discover new interests, develop new skills, and learn about crucial issues in your community.
- Make professional contacts and develop lasting friendships as you meet others in the League who share your interests.
Additionally, as a member of the Detroit League, you will be personally invited to our monthly membership meetings to hear from great speakers, such as Detroit City Clerk Janice Winfrey and Daniel Baxter, Chief Operating Officer for the Detroit City Clerk. Our membership meetings are hybrid⏤you can attend in person at the U of M Detroit Center on Woodward (Midtown, Detroit) or join us on Zoom from the comfort of your home. What do I get with my membership?
Your Detroit League membership adds your voice to a powerful force of members from all 50 states, Washington DC, the Virgin Islands, and Hong Kong.
Your LWVD membership automatically makes you a member of LWV of Michigan (LWVMI) and LWV of United States (LWVUS).
With membership, you will also receive an email copy of the Detroit League’s newsletter, The Voter, the LWV state bulletin League Links, and Action Alerts from the National League.

The best way to learn more about the League is to attend one of our monthly membership meetings, meet the Board, and get to know our charter members. See our online calendar for meeting dates and other LWV Detroit-sponsored events.
Detroit League Membership Dues
The LWV Detroit Membership renewal period starts July 1 of each year. Annual dues for LWV of Detroit 2024-2025:
- Individual Membership (join or renew) ⏤ $60
- Adding 2nd Membership for someone in the same household (join or renew) ⏤ $30
- Household Membership for 2 members in the same household (join/renew at the same time) ⏤ $90
- Students ⏤ $0
Free LWV Membership for Students! LWV has permanently waived membership dues for students.* Go to Join or Renew by Mail (below) and follow the instructions to complete the OFFLINE MEMBERSHIP APPLICATION.
*The League recognizes a student as someone at least 16 years of age registered at an accredited high school or college and enrolled in at least one one-credit course.
Join or Renew with a Credit Card
To join or renew your Detroit League membership using a credit card, tap the red button (CLICK HERE TO JOIN OR RENEW) and follow the prompts to complete the transaction. Note: There is a $2.00 additional convenience fee for this transaction.
JOIN THE LEAGUE OF WOMEN VOTERS ⏤ One of the easiest ways to support LWV is through membership.
To join LWV Detroit or to renew your membership using a credit card:
- Following the fields below, choose the membership type (individual, household, or adding 2nd member within the same household).
- Complete the membership form with personal info.
- Please note the convenience fee for an online transaction.
To join LWV Detroit or to renew your membership by writing a check:
- Return to the Membership Page.
- Scroll down to Join or Renew by Mail.
- Tap OFFLINE MEMBERSHIP APPLICATION.
- Follow the instructions.
Membership fees are waived for students, so please use the Offline Membership Application.

How Membership Dues are distributed
Annual membership dues support the national LWV office (LWVUS) in Washington, DC, the State LWV office (LWVMI) in Lansing, MI, and local LWV Detroit activities, which serve all of Detroit, Hamtramck, and Highland Park.
