National Poll Worker Recruitment Day was established by the U.S. Election Assistance Commission to encourage people to help America vote. In Michigan, clerks need more staff to support the new early voting requirements voters added to the state constitution last November. All jurisdictions will offer at least nine days of early voting in the 2024 elections.
One of the many responsibilities election officials have on their list of duties is recruiting and training poll workers. The 2022 Election Administration and Voting Survey (EAVS) reports that 54.1% of jurisdictions had a “difficult” or “very difficult” time recruiting poll workers. The data also stated that the average poll worker is 61 and older and that 16.7% of poll workers were first-time workers, further emphasizing the importance of ongoing recruitment and training for election officials. The Elections Assistance Committee (EAC) has many resources to support election officials in this essential duty.
