Ossian H. Sweet Foundation OPEN HOUSE

The Dr. Ossian H. Sweet Foundation will hold its fifth annual Open House: The Sweet Sounds of History on Saturday, September 9, 2023 from 3 to 7pm at Hutchison/Howe Elementary School (2600 Garland, Detroit, MI 48214).

On September 8, 1925, Dr. Ossian Sweet, a prominent African-American physician, purchased and moved into the modest bungalow at 2905 Garland in an all-white Detroit neighborhood. Moving in with him was his wife Gladys, brothers Henry and Otis, and seven friends. The next day unfolded into a mob scene, which led to murder charges and a landmark lawsuit that helped define Detroit race relations.

The Open House commemorates the 98th anniversary of the Sweets transforming America. Local talent will take attendees down memory lane, filling the air with music by Billie Holiday, Sam Cooke, The Gap Band, and others, as well as snippet viewings from the documentary, The Chronicles of Dr. Ossian H. Sweet.

Community partners sponsor this FREE event, including food and entertainment, bouncers for the children, a raffle, and giveaways.
