Redistricting Reform

Just a few weeks ago, the Census Bureau delivered their results, kicking off an urgent new phase for redistricting, the once-in-a-decade process of redrawing congressional and legislative district boundaries.

Across the nation, the League is empowering supporters like you to raise awareness about redistricting among neighbors and friends. We’re increasing public engagement opportunities and offering training and digital organizing tools to help supporters be effective advocates and have an impact.

Tailored to individual states, the League’s People Powered Fair Maps™ is a nationwide effort to promote redistricting reform in all 50 states and the District of Columbia—to fight for and protect fair and transparent processes across the country following the 2019 ruling in the Supreme Court case Rucho v. League of Women Voters of North Carolina.

Redistricting profoundly impacts all our lives. It determines who represents us in Congress and our legislature, how public resources are allocated, and whether our elected officials prioritize the issues that matter most to their constituents. We believe a government should promote the interests of its people—and with the redistricting process occurring this year, we have a chance to fight for fair representation!

People Powered Fair Maps aims to stop gerrymandering and put power back into the hands of the people. With your help, we can make redistricting fair, transparent, and accountable by establishing independent redistricting commissions ⏤ instituting ethical standards and codes of conduct ⏤ providing ample opportunities for public engagement.

For months, we have been educating the public, training volunteers, preparing testimony, and making our voices heard. Now we must be ready to move as soon as more Census data is released to the states. There still are numerous opportunities for you to volunteer to assist the Michigan Independent Redistricting Commission. Click here for a link to more information and contact info.

Redistricting only happens once every ten years, so it is crucial that maps are drawn with communities in mind to ensure every voters is presented in our democracy. With more than 750 state and local Leagues across the country we are uniquely positioned to bring fairness, equity, and transparency to redistricting.

Gerrymandering threatens the health of our democracy. Political maps should be powered by the people, not politicians. Thank you for helping to empower voters and defend democracy.

Sincerely,

The League of Women Voters of the United States
