How to find local news you can trust

How can we determine whether news sources are credible? Local news outlets help us make informed decisions as engaged citizens in a democracy, but the process of creating the news isn’t transparent.

The News Literacy Project (NLP) and E.W. Scripps Company are hosting the fifth National News Literacy Week 2024 (January 22-26, 2024), to explore the crisis of how we stay informed about issues and events that directly impact us. In the last 20 years, more than 2000 local newspapers have closed, leaving far too many people poorly informed. During National News Literacy Week, NLP will showcase industry professionals, journalism students, educators, and others tackling this crisis with workable solutions.

For example, on Thursday, January 25, 2024 at 7 pm (ET), NLP presents How to Find Local News You Can Trust, a free webinar that will provide an overview of news literacy concepts and the skills people need to be reliably informed, with a spotlight on local news. Put another way, this virtual workshop provides an introduction to news literacy skills you can use to determine whether a source is credible. NLP will pull the curtain back on how quality, ethical journalism is done and how it seeks to inform us fairly and accurately.
