SOCUS Preverses Voting Rights Act

On June 8, 2023, the voters won. The Supreme Court of the US (SCOTUS) upheld a ruling in Allen v. Milligan stating that Alabama must create a second majority Black congressional district in compliance with Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act. In doing so, SCOTUS defended every American’s right to equal representation.“

The landmark victory for democracy and fair maps rejected Alabama’s argument that redistricting should be “race-blind” and instead affirmed that Section 2 can continue to challenge maps that prevent communities of color from electing candidates of their choice.

This victory stems from the hard work of advocates and organizers (including the League and our partners) in Alabama and across the US. But even as we celebrate, we know that we must stay vigilant — because more fights are ahead, and we need to be ready.

This victory would not have happened without the tireless work of pro-voter activists and everyday Alabamians. Thank you for all you do to empower voters and defend democracy.
