A new law allows eligible 16- and 17-year-olds to pre-register to vote in Michigan. We’re excited about this new opportunity, which positions young people for early civic engagement.
The new law allows 16- and 17-year-old applicants who otherwise meet the requirements for registering to vote to preregister their information before beginning the currently established voter registration process. Michiganders who are between 16 and 17.5 years old can pre-register:
- Online (with a Michigan driver’s license or Michigan state ID).
- In-person at their city or township clerk’s office.
- By mail using this form to their city or township clerk.
Upon turning 17.5, the applicant will become a registered elector and be eligible to vote in the first election occurring on or after their 18th birthday.
Teenagers eligible for preregistration must have lived in Michigan for at least 30 days and attest that they live in the township or city in which they’re applying.
